Report It!

Muskego High School has adopted the Modern Language Association (MLA) handbook guidelines to assist students in the preparation of research papers.  Guidelines for preparing a report in MLA format include the general format, in-text citations, endnotes and footnotes, and the Works Cited page.  Learning this format now will be very beneficial throughout your high school and beyond!

Word 2010 has several features that will assist you in the preparation of MLA formatted reports.  In this lesson, you will learn and create a MLA template that you can use repeatedly!  You will also write an MLA formatted report using the built-in citation feature within Word 2010.  Although not part of the standard MLA format, you will also learn how Word 2010 can help prepare a cover page for a report with very little effort on your part.

As you work on this lesson, you will be gathering information from five different Internet sources about the five views available in Word 2010 and explaining each of these.  Be prepared to show your final product to Mrs. Jansen!

To begin this lesson, a template must first be created and saved.  You will be using this template in this lesson, but will be able to access and use this same template for any paper you need to complete in MLA format at Muskego High School and beyond.  Save this template in your directory and be sure to use it over and over again!

Using resources to gather information to support your writing is important and can be extremely helpful.  However, as we use resources, it is also our responsibility to document our resources.  Word 2010 has a very helpful feature to assist with this!  Be sure to check out the video link at the top of this page to see how this is done!  Now that you watched the video, let's give it a try!

Now you are ready to compose the body paragraphs for this MLA formatted paper.  Using a different resource for each paragraph, compose five paragraphs each describing a different Word 2010 view feature as mentioned in the introductory paragraph you copied and pasted.  You may utilize online resources and/or Office 2010 book resources provided for your review.  Include a unique citation (new resource) for each paragraph.

Note:  A well-written paragraph should consist of 3-5 complete sentences.  This will be used for Writing Assignment #1.

Although not part of a standard MLA formatted paper, at times you might find the need to create and include a report cover.  Word 2010 makes creating a formatted report cover quite simple.  Use the link above to read step-by-step instructions on how to do this.  Then add a cover page (of your choice) to this MLA report.  Change the data as needed so that it is relevant to your MLA formatted paper.

Before submitting this report, make sure you do the following:
